Dictionaries and vocabulary through technology, are they a good idea?

THIS LOG IS BASED ON THE ARTICLES: "Online English-English Learner Dictionaries Boost Word Learning" and "Using Technology to Assist in Vocabulary Acquisition and Reading Comprehension".

Roberto, a english student, has the task of write an article related with educational trends of the new century, he had studied, investigated and practice a lot, in order to have the correct words for his homework, sadly, in the moment of write, some ideas come to his mind, the problem is that, his native language is spanish, sometimes, Roberto is now in a difficult part, he needs something that can help him to find the correct word to finish....

What is a dictionary?

Why is important to know the meaning? because today, we are going to disarm and create educational methods basing the didactical side on the dictionary.

First the article "Online English-English Learner Dictionaries Boost Word Learning" presents, five interesting, types of dictionaries application that teachers can use in order to develop the word learning. Some of the examples are:

Dictionary feature 1: Corpus-based dictionaries: The main porpuse of this strategy is, to show students how the words work in the world, the "formal" way can be called.
Some applications are:
-Find the words that you don't know
-Target words to prepare students for following activities

Dictionary feature 2: Word frequency: How often do we use words? that is the question that is posed to work with this method. The point explain us, how often a word is used in a normal speech, and how teachers can use this to develop "Speech Conscience" in order to make our students knowers of what and how they speak.
Applications:
-Students recording activities: Students will record a speech related with X topic and after record it, they will take notes about the words that they use the most, in order to find the meaning of those words to be conscious about the way that they speak.

Dictionary feature 3: Collocations: Where and how the words have to be putted? is the question with we are going to introduce this point,
Sometimes, students don't realize where some words should be putted to give sense to their ideas; Dictionaries can be a good option to help them, Why? well, if you know what are you writing you know were to put it.
Applications:
-Find the place to that word: Students will write a paragraph in order to place some words that they were asked to investigate before on their dictionaries.

Dictionary feature 4: Authentic examples: Meaningful tasks, that is what is asked for our students, ideas that can be used in our students contexts, what is the porpuse of learn the "Thanksgiving day" if in their houses they believe in "la virgen maria"?
This point show us how important real life context are necessary....
Applications:
-Write real examples: Students need to find out a way to express their ideas basing their point on interactive dictionaries for example.

Dictionary feature 5: Topical vocabulary: There is always that funny students that says "Hey teacher, how can we say "Tamal" on english" teachers gets angry with those clowns, but the reality is that, a question like that one, is valid, students unconsciously what to know how to say normal life things, because they are trying to apply the new knowledge to their reality.
Teachers should have a answer, that is why "tropical dictionaries" were created for.

In conclusion: Many ways exist to help our student's comprehesion, dictionaries are a incredible way to boost our students to understand better how bigger the world of languages are.

-Using Multimedia for Vocabulary­building, This part present different programs (ALEXIA) to create a context on which students can develop their vocabulary, using different strategies through the program that was mention for example.

-Benefits of Multimedia for Reading Comprehension, The multimedia, is a great component when we mixed up with online sources, internet is a door of different readings, teachers only need to create the tasks in order to apply some strategies like: Multimedia Glossing.

To conclude: Like I mentioned in the introduction, to internalize what our students are reading they need to know the vocabulary involved, technology is a meaningful way to develop student's vocabulary comprehesion.

  1. What a good log you have written and analyzed, Diego. I really liked the part where you were explaining that sometimes students ask questions that for us, as teacher, seem very weird but the point is that we need to be ready in order to provide them a good answer. There are some cases that students wonder about everything they read so in this way we need to have in hand some dictionaries because we might not know everything they ask.
